0 Aung San Suu Kyi honoured by Brighton Festival

Brighton Festival have once again shown innovation in arts programming by inviting Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi to be their Guest Director for 2011. We are delighted to have designed the marketing materials for this year’s Festival, which will include a 72 page programme, street banners, posters and press advertising.
For obvious reasons Aung San Suu Kyi will not be attending the Festival in person. With that in mind we wanted to create an image that suggested her spiritual presence in Brighton for the 2011 Festival. We settled on a ‘filmic’ feel for the 2011 Festival image, sourcing a portrait of Aung San Suu Kyi (photographed by Stuart Isett).
Inspired by the ethereal quality of analogue photography, we created a ‘double exposure’ treatment of the original Aung San Suu Kyi portrait, against the fittingly Asian influenced backdrop of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion. The final image aims to create an uplifting message of celebration and liberty. For the Brighton Festival logotype we have subtly tweaked the font ‘Progress’ to reflect the shapes that are found in Burmese typography.
